The first warm days of the year change something. The light becomes softer, the air milder - and suddenly the desire for fresh flowers on the table grows.
Decorating tulips in glass vases - hardly any other idea is so simple and yet so effective. Tulips are the most impatient flowers of the year: as soon as there is snow, they are already in the shops - in bunches and colourful, here in rich purple.
This is what makes them the perfect spring table decoration. You don't need much. A few cylinder vases, some water - that's all you need.
In this article, we'll show you how to decorate tulips in glass vases: not in the classic bunched arrangement, but loosely arranged at different heights. The result looks well thought out and yet can be realised in 15 minutes. Whether for a company event or a Sunday table - this look is perfect.
The colour palette: violet, soft purple, off-white and silver
This colour palette looks sophisticated and ambitious. The deep purple of the tulips takes the lead - and everything else on the table takes a step back without disappearing. Off-white and delicate lilac emphasise the rich, dark violet without competing with it. The matt silver keeps the composition calm.
Deep violet is a rather rare colour in spring - and that's exactly what you feel. It has something serious, almost ceremonial and surprising about it because you don't expect it to be like this. At the same time, it looks warm and velvety. The colour combination creates a tension between lightness and depth - a table that looks festive without being formal. Quiet enough for a weekday lunch, strong enough for an evening to remember
Step by step: Decorating tulips in glass vases
No prior knowledge required. No special tools. Just tulips, vases and these instructions.
1. prepare the vases. Fill cylinder vases of different heights (e.g. 15, 22 and 30 cm) only a few centimetres high with fresh, cold water - it is sufficient if the lower ends of the stems are in the water. Note for at home: Tulips are thirsty. Check the water level regularly and top up if necessary.
2. sort the tulips in your hand. Take 3-5 tulips and place the flower heads at different heights: some at the top, some lower. This creates a loose, natural silhouette.
3. cut the stems straight. Hold the bundle next to the vase and cut the stems straight - just below the desired length. A diagonal cut is not necessary for tulips.
4 Place in the vase. Place the bundle directly in the water. The stems through the clear glass are deliberately part of the look - do not hide them.
5. place vases on the table. Loosely group high and low vases along the centre of the table. Guests can look over the centre - no closed curtain of flowers.
6th evening variant. Fill some cylinder vases with pillar candles instead of flowers and place them between the flower vases. Same look, different light.
How to keep tulips fresh for longer
Only a few centimetres of water should reach into the vase - the stems do not need to be deep. It is important to check the water level daily, as tulips drink a surprising amount. Cut the stems straight, change the water every two days and place the vase in a cool place: away from direct sunlight, heaters and ripe fruit. The latter releases ethylene and causes flowers to wilt more quickly. These simple steps will keep spring on the table for much longer. And because tulips are available from February to May, it's worth knowing this trick right from the start.
Why tulips look so good in glass vases
The classic tulip bouquet is beautiful - but not special. If you decorate tulips in glass vases, you get something different: the tulips stand individually or in small groups in cylinder vases of different heights. The stems are visible, the water is clear and the flowers are at different levels. This creates a lighter, more modern effect - and lets the structure of the plant speak for itself. In the cylinder vases with space between the stems, a lively, changing composition is created - which often looks more beautiful on the second day than on the first.

Fun Fact: Tulips actually continue to grow after pruning - sometimes up to 5 cm. What is still straight on the first day will lean to one side on the second. This becomes a problem in narrow vases. In cylinder vases, it becomes a character.

Experience tulip fields live - 3 places that are worth a visit
Keukenhof in Lisse is the most famous show garden in the world: 32 hectares, seven million flower bulbs, hundreds of tulip varieties. It opens every year around 19 March and closes in mid-May. The main flowering period is between mid-April and early May. Tickets must be booked online with a time slot - they sell out quickly, especially in April.
De Tulperij in the Noordoostpolder is for those who prefer to experience the fields without the crowds of tourists. Here the tulips grow outside in real fields - no park, no staging, just row upon row of colour.
If you don't want to travel to the Netherlands, you can also find tulips in large numbers in Germany: Tulipan in the Britzer Garten in Berlin displays over 100,000 tulips in 160 varieties on around 2,200 square metres every year from the beginning of April - from wild tulips to parrot tulips. And in the Dutch Quarter in Potsdam, the largest Dutch residential area outside the Netherlands will be transformed on 18 and 19 April 2026 at the 24th Potsdam Tulip Festival into a colourful Little Amsterdam - with music, dance, crafts and, of course, tulips in all colours.
Travelling tip: If you want to see the fields in the Netherlands in full bloom, plan your trip for the second half of April. The weather is then more stable than in March, and everything is open out in the fields.
