Boho, vintage, urban chic - how to find your individual wedding style

„I would love to have a boho wedding!“

„Vintage details would be great!“

„What is urban chic and what are you doing at a wedding?“

Does this sound familiar to you? And are you a little at a loss when it comes to finding the right wedding style?

The days when wedding design consisted of white tablecloths decorated with red roses trimmed with pearls and trailing herbs are long gone. Fortunately - in our opinion. Thanks to countless inspirations in magazines, wedding blogs and on Pinterest, weddings have become more diverse and individualised. Styles and trends have developed and with them service providers who specialise in precisely one of these styles. It can be quite a challenge to find out which wedding style actually suits you best. Because depending on which style you choose, this will determine many other elements of your wedding, such as the right location, the choice of a photographer who can also depict the chosen style well (yes, there are subtle differences here), stationery that matches the style, a stylish dress and, of course, the decorations.

We asked Irka, Creative Director at Magnolias on Silk, to share how she helps clients figure out what their wedding style is and how they can pull it off without breaking the mould. The following tips make this task an inspiring way to start the wedding planning process!

Where is the best place to start to find your own wedding style?

The answer is quite simple: yourself!

„I always encourage our clients to look at themselves first and look for inspiration for their wedding outside of the wedding world,“ says Irka. „So I ask them to think about what makes them tick as a couple. Do they like travelling? Do they share hobbies? What connects them? If you integrate such individual elements into the wedding design, you as a couple can easily share your very own personal story with your favourite people. An individual touch that will certainly be remembered.“

Many people find it difficult to describe their own style. In everyday life, they don't usually give it much thought. As a couple, are you crazy and unconventional or more classic? Do they like it glamorous or more rustic? What is their own interior design style? And what's in their wardrobe?
Irka also has a few simple tips for this.

„It helps couples if they think about designs and styles that others have already created, such as film sets, restaurants, hotels, patterns and graphics, and think about what they particularly like about them. If you put this together in pictures, you usually realise very quickly what appeals to you.“

1. pinspiration

Pinterest be praised! If you don't have a Pinterest account then now is the best time to put one on. To Pinterest you can search for thousands of inspirations and pin what appeals to you the most. Do you recognise many similarities between the pins? Then you may already be unconsciously drawn to a certain wedding style.

2. no stress at all!

Irka says that she often observes that brides in particular get stressed because even though they have already decided on a style, they continue to search for ideas. „This is tempting, but unfortunately also quite counterproductive. Confused and overwhelmed, couples end up not knowing what they actually want. I therefore advise our customers to stop looking for other ideas once they have decided on a style. After all, you don't come back to Tinder after the engagement just in case there's something else out there! At least you shouldn't do that,“ jokes Irka.

3. location

Many couples choose the location before they have even decided on a wedding style. When it comes to choosing a suitable wedding style, the wedding location can be both a help and a hindrance. The location is a meaningful reflection of what you both find appealing as a couple. If you love nature, you are less likely to choose an industrial loft or a castle for your wedding. If you favour a location that suits you best, one or the other wedding style will automatically fall away. For example, an urban chic wedding wouldn't suit a beach or a vintage wedding wouldn't suit a roof terrace.

4 Do I really want this?

Finally, you should also ask yourself whether you will still be as in love and convinced of your wedding concept in 25 years' time as you are right now? Here you should ask yourself whether, for example, you would like to show your grandchildren pictures of The Hobbit-inspired wedding later and still be just as enthusiastic and passionate about your special day - as you were back then - or not. If not, you should favour a more timeless style or theme.

5. ask a pro

Friends and family are usually the first choice when it comes to assessing which wedding style might suit you best as a couple. However, opinions are often very subjective, especially when it comes to weddings. If your mother has always wanted a princess dream in white for you, but you prefer colours, joy can quickly turn into frustration.

That's why you should look for a professional who can look at your wishes and suggestions objectively and give you tips and advice on how to combine things. This can often make a big difference.

The most important thing you should really internalise is that the wedding concept must suit you as a couple. Only if the concept is coherent will you be authentic as a couple and show that you are not just chasing trends or just doing what everyone else is doing. A concept that doesn't match your style or the location will very quickly look artificial or out of place. Yours A unique day also deserves a unique concept!

How do you realise a wedding style with style?

Once you have decided on a wedding style, stay true to it. Nothing looks more inauthentic and artificial than a wedding with a wild mix of different styles.

This is certainly the most difficult part of the process. Because it means choosing only those ideas from the multitude that really fit the overall picture. „If you're getting married in a castle, the rustic details you love might not quite fit. In my designs, I try to stay as true to the chosen location as possible so that the wedding is authentic,“ says Irka.
